And it began driving me — I kept thinking about it even though I knew it wasn’t the right car for my wife and me at this stage in our lives. Perhaps you know the feeling. We all tend to love the things of the world. When our love for such things diminishes our love for God, however, we may be looking at an idol. We may make an idol out of a particular home, a step up the corporate ladder, a change in our physical appearance, or even the hope to be accepted by someone else. None of these things in and of themselves are bad or wrong to pursue; however, if anything begins to eclipse our intimacy with God or our love for Him, that thing has become an idol. A good way to learn to identify and deal with our idols is to read the story of the golden calf in the book of Exodus. It is a stunning display of the ease with which we humans forget our very reason for existence: to know God and to enjoy Him forever. We are His treasured possession.

And He makes it happen. Yet we have the freedom and responsibility to live for God. This is a conundrum that only makes sense when we acknowledge that God’s ways are higher than ours. We are called to live well in the present, trusting in God and obeying Him, in order to make for a better tomorrow. To get your mind around how it is that we—people locked in a time-bound world—should interact with a God who knows the past, present, and future, join us in our read through the Bible; you will see how it works itself out even in the latter part of Genesis.

The discovery may come to you through careful search and inquiry, reading Scripture and seeking wise counsel; or it may come to you suddenly through a dream, as happened to people in the Bible. For most of us, the understanding of one’s destiny unfolds gradually and perhaps imperceptibly as we walk the course of our lives. As a rule, they are not made obvious to us until we enter God’s presence. Then we will know that nothing in our lives, not even the difficult and rugged portions of the journey, was a mistake; God has been working all things for good. However, if we are not growing in these seven key moral aspects, we may be spiritually blind and short-sighted, deluding ourselves. How do we know if we are really in the faith? The Apostle John writes in a very simple and yet profound manner as he weaves within his letters five tests. They are:

Paul brings clarity to our confusion by providing insight as we seek answers to questions about the Second Coming. Is there soul sleep? How will existing believers join those who return with Christ? What about those who died before Christ first came? What about cremation? When will the rapture happen? How do we encourage one another when end time events often seem ambiguous? In this study of 1 Thessalonians, we are encouraged to keep our focus on one main thing: love for God and our neighbor as we watch, pray, and prepare for our Lord’s return. 2 Thessalonians moves us beyond confusion about the Second Coming of Christ to the powerful delusion of the Antichrist. Paul offers five aspects about Satan’s deceptive influence about which we must be aware:

No greater gift has been given to man than salvation through Jesus Christ. The first part of this great Epistle shows us what we deserve — condemnation; what we received — justification; and what we experience — sanctification. We must understand the path, process, and progress of our salvation to truly appreciate our ultimate reward — glorification. Is it right to honor and obey a government that rebels against the laws of God? To answer such conundrums, we must consider Biblical spheres of authority: God’s Kingdom, government, society, the Church, marriage, and family. All of this was in Paul’s mind as he crafted the latter half of Romans, describing the implications of God’s sovereignty over nations. As citizens of two kingdoms (heaven and earth), His words encourage us to:
- [Major & Minor Prophets](https://scriptureawakening.com/product/major-minor-prophets/): The image of the eagle has inspired people and nations throughout history. The Bible is no exception in this regard. What animal in God’s vast creation can better symbolize God’s soaring and sovereign reign than the eagle? Few of us fully realize, however, that God wishes to share His victorious life with us. Isaiah knew this was true and wrote to help us know it as well. In the second half of his glorious prophecies, the great seer encourages us to receive from the Lord the strength of the eagle (Isaiah 40-48) that we might not stumble (Isaiah 49-57) but rather soar (Isaiah 58-66). We thus learn more about God’s condition, our condition without God, and our condition with God. We are called to soar! In this study, we are challenged to view our emotions from a fresh and Biblical perspective. We are sometimes uncomfortable with our own feelings, especially when faced with sadness, grief, and tears. Yet, in the Scriptures we find many examples of God’s saints shedding tears including Jacob, Joseph, Hannah, Jonathan, Saul, David, Hezekiah, Peter, Paul, and Mary. Jeremiah, in fact, is often referred to as the “weeping prophet.” But as you look closer at his book, you will see his tears originate in the heart of the Lord. We may dare to say that “God weeps.” Jeremiah has crafted this book essentially as a poetic dirge. In Lamentations, he records his deep mourning, side-by-side with a recognition of God’s anger and judgment. Yet, in the midst of it all, the prophet expresses profound reasons for hope. Lamentations helps us to understand how our deepest, darkest, and most dire tragedies can be a divine set-up for abiding hope. God is able to turn difficult times into eternal benefit for us and for God’s glory. Great is God’s faithfulness! Ezekiel’s book outlines the time before, during, and after stages of the siege of Jerusalem. God gives Ezekiel a symbolic vision of Israel as very dry bones and asks him if they can live. What appears utterly dead to Ezekiel doesn’t rattle the prophet so deeply as to shake his faith. And so God engages Ezekiel to cooperate with heaven to accomplish the impossible. The meaning behind this profound vision can stir any nominal believer in God to expect the Lord to do something greater — much greater than may seemed possible — for our day as well. How are we to live in this world with an eye on the next? Few Biblical characters provide a clearer and more brilliant example than Daniel. This servant of the Lord faced great perils while living in Babylon. He could have succumbed to anxiety and fear but chose instead to trust in the God. The visions Daniel received contain great insight to help us live like Daniel in righteousness, joy, and peace amid the infidelity and unbelief in our day.
- [Lessons for Life](https://scriptureawakening.com/product/lessons-for-life/): The story of Job can help us keep a right perspective on evil, suffering, and every trial and challenge that comes our way. This Biblical drama plays out with Job, the sufferer; Satan, the accuser; Job’s wife, the caregiver; Job’s friends, the blamers; and God, the Sovereign and benevolent ruler over good and evil. The message of Job, as he endures loss, afflictions, accusations, and even blame for his misfortune is this: God can be trusted in all circumstances, always. Despite what we may feel and what the world may say, God remains the all-loving and all-powerful One. A generous portion of the Bible is given to help us understand how we can connect our emotions to the God who created them. The Psalms express a cornucopia of human emotion: highs and lows; joy and grief; peace and turmoil. This lesson categorizes the Psalms into four main types. There are those that:
- [Reigning Heroes](https://scriptureawakening.com/product/reigning-heroes/): Solomon started well, but his wives caused his heart to be split between God’s priorities and the world’s passions. God then tore the kingdom from Solomon and divided it into the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. The renowned wisdom of king Solomon soured into foolish actions. He let go of discernment and embraced materialism, sensualism, and syncretism to his own harm, with tragic results. Solomon’s downfall reminds us to guard our hearts and to pray, “Lord give me an undivided heart.” After the kingdom was divided, the northern kings all did evil in God’s sight. But eight southern kings in Judah, from Asa to Josiah, did right. In this lesson, we focus on Josiah who walked as did David, with an undivided heart. He pressed on for God with the focus of an Olympiad. We too have a race to run. Are you and I running with perseverance or passivity? The book of 2 Kings provides key principles to help us run well, for the glory of God. 1 & 2 Chronicles is full of names, genealogies, and rehashed history of David, Solomon, and the kings. What’s the point? Well, it’s Scripture. All of it is God-breathed! These books provide historical sources, peoples, times, places, writings and events that can be verified via archeology. It is as though God left us footprints in time upon which our faith can rest. Praise God for those who chronicled His story to be remembered, researched, and reviewed. Ezra, a scribe, carefully studied and transcribed the law of God. His writings have been examined, compared, and proven. In this lesson, we will notice the marvelous connections and verifications we can see related to times, peoples, and events recorded in great detail in God’s Word. More than that, Ezra offers insights for us that may cause us to think, “He got it right.” We will consider the right timing, the right Person, and the right Word. Nehemiah may well be the greatest book ever written on spiritual leadership. He appears on the scene to build walls and to build up the people. Based on his consecration to God, Nehemiah inspires and unites the people in a daunting task. First, they must repair their outside problem: the city had no protection. He then helps the people to repair their inside problem: calling on them to rend their hearts, strengthen their faith, and obey the living God. Though Esther makes no mention of God and offers no description of prayer, the book of Esther is one of the most stunning examples in the Bible of the sovereign move of God to answer the united prayers of His people. This lesson compares and contrasts the peril Esther faced to approach her king on his throne with that of the Christian who is invited to freely approach the throne of the King of Kings. Time and again, we see in history how dire crises can motivate God’s people to humble themselves and cry out to God in united prayer. Esther puts a golden frame around such historic patterns.

Even as God repeated the command to “be strong and courageous” to Joshua, a study of the book of Joshua can help us do the same. This lesson covers the spies report, the people’s crossing of the Jordan, their covenant with God, the battles faced at Jericho and Ai, Achan’s sin, the Gibeonite’s trick, and the kingdoms defeated. The word Judge means “deliverer,” of which Israel needed many. This lesson gives an overview of the 12 judges who led God’s people into freedom from their bondage and from their own folly. Judges portrays a clear picture of the cycles of sin, suffering, sorrow, and salvation that marked this time period in Israel’s history. Special focus is given to the life of Othniel. In the same way he was equipped by the Spirit of God, we too can draw on God’s help to point others to our Great Deliverer, Jesus Christ. The four short chapters of Ruth are an inspired story that foreshadow our Redeemer. Ruth’s love and sacrificial commitment to her mother-in-law is brought full circle as Ruth herself reaps the love and grace of Boaz. This lesson shows the need, the Person, the transaction, and the transformation played out in the prototypical lives of Ruth and Boaz, who represent the Church-Bride and Christ-Bridegroom. The Ark of the Covenant was taken from God’s people. Could they still experience the presence of God? In this study, we are faced personally with the question of what matters more: form or substance? The Israelites had once put their hope in the Lord but had lost perspective and replaced Him with an object of worship. Do we do the same in our worship services? 1 Samuel provides fresh insights by reminding us of a prophet who brought glory to God, of King Saul who strove to get glory for himself, and of David who sought God’s glory. We can learn from each of their examples. In 2 Samuel, we learn about honor through David, who earnestly desired to show the kindness of God to Saul’s family because of his covenant love and friendship with Jonathan. Mephibosheth feared he would lose his life under a king’s wrath, and instead is shown honor as he is esteemed and brought into the king’s house for the rest of his life. Likewise, we now share in the honor of being God’s children by the inheritance we have gained in His Son Jesus. Are we inviting others into this position of honor?
- [How To Know God’s Will](https://scriptureawakening.com/product/how-to-know-gods-will/): This lesson focuses on the power of prayer and intercession. We draw an example through Aaron and Hur holding up Moses’ arms while Joshua fought Israel’s first battle. Their example provides encouragement for us to pray at all times and for everyone — ourselves, our families, our friends, our churches and leaders. In the second half of Exodus, we find God’s design for the wilderness Tabernacle, worship objects, and building materials related to it — all to be shadows and symbols of the truly permanent realities we have in the kingdom of God. The Tabernacle instructs us about our Lord and Savior: the cleansing, the altars, the sacrifices, the bread, the incense, and the shed blood — all point to Jesus Christ. The book of Leviticus describes the tribe designated as priests who were set apart to be holy. They were called to serve God on behalf of the people. What appear to be countless rules and restrictions for God’s Temple servants actually brings clarity to the call of God upon all of his people to be His special possession — even us! The title Numbers was given to this book in reference to the census of God’s people in the desert. Yet, this book includes so much more. Here we find the story of Caleb who believed what God promised and commanded over and against the fear and objections of his peers. The wholehearted devotion of Caleb toward God was a like rare and beautiful diamond found randomly in the desert sands. Caleb’s character and strength preserved him to lead the next generation into Israel’s promised inheritance. In Deuteronomy, Moses repeats the giving of God’s law so that the Israelites won’t forget God’s words and works. This lesson provides practical tools to help you gain and retain God’s word by reading, meditating, and then memorizing Scripture. In doing so, we can more easily remember and experience the mercy of God.
