Founder & President

The son of the founders of Community Bible Study, Bill knows from personal experience that people grow in spiritual depth and Biblical knowledge when they use carefully constructed Bible studies illuminated with well researched commentary background. Bill saw Community Bible Study develop from his parents’ living room to an international ministry serving many thousands of people. Having written commentaries for Community Bible Study, he began writing material for the churches he pastored so he could connect Sunday sermons to weekly devotional reading, and small group Bible studies. He tested and improved materials in congregations over a period of 15 years, and through his Doctor of Ministry studies at Fuller Theological Seminary, he researched the most effective ways to build the BNEXT ministry. He also holds a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Seminary and a Bachelor of Biology from Westmont College. Bill has written a variety of articles, publications, and books. Bill serves as executive director and president of the board for Scripture Awakening.

Interim Chair

Al has been involved with Scripture Awakenings and Bible in 90 Days since 2008. He has participated in the Bible in 90 Day’s program numerous times both as a participant and as a teacher.  As a teacher in Sunday School, he has taught and written numerous programs with a special emphasis in The Bible and Church History. One of his biggest delights was teaching a program on the Reformation to a joint session of Protestants and Catholics and then leading the combined group in Bible in 90 Days, covering both the Protestant Bible and the Deuterocanonical books.  He has visited Israel several times both as a pilgrim and on business. For almost 50 years, his day job has focused on the energy and finance business. He has served as Chief Financial Officer for both public and private companies and has served as a director for companies both inside and outside the energy sector. Al and Caryl met in 7th grade, have been married since 1973, have two daughters, a son-in-law that is a Pastor and three granddaughters. He and Caryl have a private foundation that focuses on HEART – health, education, arts, religion and teaching.  He joined the Scripture Awakening board in 2019 and succeeded Robert Voorhees as Interim Chairman in 2020.  Al is a graduate of Texas A&M in 1971 (Finance) and the University of Houston in 1977 (MBA) and has been CPA since 1974.

Bob accepted Jesus Christ in 1972, while living in Washington, DC. Bob has experienced a closeness to God through financial and health challenges, and uncertainties of the future that have all strengthened his faith in the Lord. Having been a member of several churches in seven states, Bob has found that people are thirsting for God’s Word, but believes many churches do not encourage their members to study the Word and get to know God personally. Starting his career as a federal anti-trust lawyer, Bob served as executive vice president of a major national energy association, then founded a startup energy company. Later Bob directed national government affairs’ activities as vice-president of a major international environmental corporation. Bob formerly served as an elder at Peace Memorial Presbyterian Church in Clearwater, FL, as finance chair of Union United Methodist Church in Washington, DC, and former board member of the YMCA in Hendersonville, NC.

Originally from Asheville, NC and now living in Charlotte, NC. BA in Business Management and Economics at NCSU. MDiv in Pastoral Leadership at IGSL (International Graduate School of Leadership). Served with Cru (formally Campus Crusade for Christ) for over 40 years and served overseas for 36 years. Most of my years were involved with campus ministry. I was a campus director, city director, Southeast Asia director, and then part of the Global Campus Team. For three years was a faculty at IGSL teaching evangelism, discipleship, preaching/teaching, and OTJ field ministry training. Presently I am with Cru’s strategy called Church Movements where I am training churches on evangelism, discipleship, multiplication of ministry, and church planting. I was doing church planting in the Philippines, both traditional and micro church movements, for over 13 years while leading campus ministry. We were able to see churches multiply to over 5 generations. I also was leading a lawyer’s ministry in Manila for several years. Married to Sandy and we have five children and five grandchildren.

John was born near New York City, attended college in Ohio, and moved to Houston for Graduate School in 1972. He graduated with a PhD in 1977 and began a career in a major oil company that kept him and his family in Houston for forty-three years. John retired in 2009 and a few years later he and his wife Judy moved to Hendersonville, NC to be close to their grandchildren. John was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, Houston where he served as an elder. John and Judy are now members of Hendersonville Presbyterian church. He is active in RAK ministry, a global healing and deliverance ministry with headquarters in Houston and a branch in Hendersonville. John and Judy were founders of the Houston branch of the National Christian Foundation. John was the former chairman and board member of the Forge for Families in Houston and serves on the Advisory board of His Father’s Heart ministry. He was chairman of the board of Scripture Awakening and has returned as a board member. John believes in the power of intercessory and healing prayer. He believes that the Church in America is sorely in need of revival, which can only be brought about by the Church’s reclaiming it’s authority and power through the cross of Christ, rooted in Scripture; life in the Kingdom of God, the indwelling Holy Spirit, and the Spiritual gifts that are given to each believer.

Robert was the Chief Financial Officer and a Managing Director for a privately held energy company based in Houston, Texas for over 30 years. He is a member of Christ Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas where he serves as an elder and on numerous committees. Robert and his wife, Amy, have been active members of Community Bible Study since 2000. They have served as both core group leaders and senior leaders in that ministry.  Robert has been involved with Scripture Awakening since 2012, serving on the board and other SA committees for most of that time.  Robert also serves as Treasurer and a Board member for Global Pastor Training, a ministry that trains and equips pastors who have no formal training, primarily in Africa.  He has also been a board member for The Gathering of Men, a ministry that disciples men to maturity in Christ.  Robert and his high school sweetheart and wife, Amy, have been Houston residents since they graduated from Louisiana State University in 1978. They have been married for over 40 years and are blessed with three adult children, all of whom are married, and six beautiful grandchildren.

Kenneth Boa is engaged in a ministry of relational evangelism and discipleship, teaching, writing, and speaking. He holds a B.S. from Case Institute of Technology, a Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary, a Ph.D. from New York University, and a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford in England. Dr. Boa is the President of Reflections Ministries, an organization that seeks to encourage, teach, and equip people to know Christ, follow Him, become progressively conformed to His image, and reproduce His life in others. He is also President of Trinity House Publishers, a publishing company that is dedicated to the creation of tools that will help people manifest eternal values in a temporal arena by drawing them to intimacy with God and a better understanding of the culture in which they live. Ken and his wife live in Atlanta, GA.

Steve Brown is the founder of Key Life Network, which exists to communicate that the deepest message of the ministry of Jesus is the radical grace of God. Having spent 25 years as a pastor, Brown now devotes much of his time to the radio broadcasts Key Life and Steve Brown, Etc. which are currently heard on more than 600 outlets. Brown has a B.A. in philosophy and religion from High Point College and an S.T.B. degree from Boston University School of Theology. He is a visiting professor of practical theology at Knox Theological Seminary and at Westminster Theological Seminary. Brown is also an in-demand speaker and the author of numerous books, including A Scandalous Freedom, How to Talk So People Will Listen and Approaching God. His articles have also appeared in many top Christian publications. Additionally, Brown is a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Religious Broadcasters and a current member of the Board of Harvest, USA. With such varied experience, Brown refuses to be a “guru,” doesn’t want to be anyone’s mother and gives, in his teaching, the freedom to think. He lives in Florida with his wife, Anna. They have two daughters and three grandchildren.

Michael Card has a career that spans 34 years, recorded over 37 albums, authored over 25 books, hosted a radio program, and written for a wide range of magazines. While he has penned such favorites as “El Shaddai”, “Love Crucified Arose”, and “Emmanuel,” He never imagined selling more than 4 million albums or writing over 19 #1 hits. The popularity of his work seemed a stark contrast to his goal in life, to simply and quietly teach the Bible. Although music provided him the opportunity to share insight gained through extensive research, writing songs alone limited what he felt called to share. Card would frequently agonize over having to condense the vast depth and richness of scripture into a three-minute song. And so he fell, quite naturally, into the field of book writing where he has garnered numerous awards. In everything he does, Card seeks to encourage his audience to join in his own journey to know and be known by God by asking questions and entering into meaningful discussion with one another. Card’s vision is to edify the body of Christ around the world by sharing experiences and resources in the context of community in order to help facilitate the growth of smaller and more intimate communities within his audience’s own churches and neighborhoods. Michael is a graduate of Western Kentucky University, where he earned his bachelors and master degrees in biblical studies. Michael has also received honorary PhD’s in music and Christian education from Whitfield Seminary and Philadelphia Biblical University. Michael lives in Franklin, TN, where, with a group of close friends, he pursues racial reconciliation and neighborhood renewal. He and his wife, Susan, have four children and one grandchild.

John Guest was born and raised in Oxford, England. While training to become an engineer, he came to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ at a Billy Graham crusade in 1954. Following his graduation from Trinity College in Bristol, England in 1961, he was ordained in the Church of England. John also holds Honorary Doctorate degrees from Geneva College and Grove City College. John came to the United States in 1966 to work for Scripture Union USA among high school and university students. In 1968, along with his bride Kathleen, John was called to Pittsburgh to work for the Pittsburgh Experiment – with a vision that Pittsburgh might become as famous for God as it was for steel. As part of the vision for Pittsburgh, in 1970 John founded the Coalition for Christian Outreach, a ministry to university students; co-founded the Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation; co-founded Trinity Episcopal School of Ministry; and co-founded the South American Missionary Society. Over the past twenty years, John has been invited to address major cities as a spokesman for the Christian faith throughout the United States and around the world, in such diverse nations as Ukraine, Russia, Uganda, Ghana, Cuba, Romania and Albania. In this role, he has spoken to nearly two million people. One by-product of this work was the formation of Church Planters International, and the planting of some 1,300 new churches in the former Soviet Union. Dr. Guest served as Senior Rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Sewickley, PA for twenty years. He became the first Senior Pastor and Rector of Christ Church at Grove Farm, a church plant in the northwest suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA, where he served for fifteen years. John presently is the Minister at Large still working in association with Christ Church at Grove Farm. For twenty years, John’s sermon messages were heard on the LifeFocus with John Guest daily radio program in Western Pennsylvania. John was also a recording artist in the late 60’s (part of the British invasion), and has authored more than a half dozen books. He and his wife, Kathleen, have four children.

Joanie Haley, Executive Director of the Janice and Robert McNair Foundation, has been with the foundation for 19 years, and notes, “I consider it an honor and a privilege to work with the Foundation and the McNairs. Walter Kaiser, Jr. was born into a German Baptist (now North American Baptist) home on April 11,1933, in Folcroft, PA. Dr. Walter C. Kaiser Jr. He was the oldest of the six children of Walter Christian Kaiser Sr., a farmer and a godly Christian leader in the local church, and Estelle Jaworsky Kaiser. An ongoing theme in the life and work of Kaiser — a linking of the burgeoning postwar evangelicalism of the twentieth century with its rich and nearly forgotten spiritual heritage from the past. In the end, Kaiser’s approach to Scripture, which he calls promise theology [or “epangelicalism” (sic)], would prove to be an effective means of transcending the narrow walls that had built up around modern evangelicalism. Dr. Kaiser is the Colman M. Mockler distinguished Professor of Old Testament and President Emeritus of Gordon-Conwell. He also served as the seminary’s President from 1997-2006. Prior to coming to Gordon-Conwell, Dr. Kaiser taught Bible and archaeology at Wheaton College, Wheaton Illinois and taught at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in several capacities. In addition to teaching in the Old Testament Department, he was Senior Vice President of Education, Academic Dean, and Senior Vice President of Distance Learning and Ministries. Dr. Kaiser currently serves on the boards of several Christian organizations. He has contributed to such publications as Journal for the Study of Old Testament, Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, Christianity Today, Westminster Theological Journal, and Evangelical Quarterly. He has also written numerous books, some of which are: Toward an Old Testament Theology; Ecclesiastes: Total Life; Toward an Exegetical Theology: Biblical Exegesis for Preaching and Teaching; Hard Sayings of the Old Testament; Communicator’s Commentary: Micah to Malachi; Leviticus in The New Interpreter’s Bible; Exodus in the Expositor’s Bible Commentary; The Messiah in the Old Testament; A History of Israel; and co-authored An Introduction to Biblical Hermeneutics: The Search for Meaning. Dr. Kaiser and late his wife, Marge, have three sons, one daughter, four granddaughters, and three grandsons.

Jack Modesett was born in Corpus Christi, brainwashed at Princeton, restored to sanity in the Navy. Married to Marcia since 1961, blessed by three children and eleven grandchildren. Served formerly as Chairman of the Board at Christianity Today, is a Bible in 90 Days video presenter, and escaped from business to become full-time Sunday school teacher. Most people could write their autobiographies by telling the stories of those who have helped them. I certainly could. Remembering parents and grandparents, friends, teachers and mentors, I realize that every life is a narrative of its intersections with other lives. Recognizing that none of us has anything except that which he has been given by others, we respond with love and gratitude. Saved by Grace, amazed by Mercy, helped by many, I long to be in that number when the saints go marching in. But not just yet :).

Hugh Ross is an astronomer and best-selling author who travels the globe speaking on the compatibility of advancing scientific discoveries with the timeless truths of Christianity. His organization, Reasons to Believe (RTB), is dedicated to demonstrating, via a variety of resources and events, that science and biblical faith are allies, not enemies. Prompted by family, friends, and colleagues, he founded Reasons to Believe in 1986, to bring scientific evidence for Christianity to light. More than 25 years later, Hugh leads a team of scholars who keep tabs on the frontiers of research with the goal of demonstrating that sound reason and scientific findings – including the very latest discoveries – consistently support rather than erode, confidence in the biblical God. Hugh shares this message through numerous books – including Navigating Genesis, Hidden Treasures in the Book of Job, and Why the Universe Is the Way It Is – as well as articles, videos, and podcasts. He has also spoken at 300 universities, 400 churches, and numerous conferences around the world. With a degree in physics from the University of British Columbia and a National Research Council of Canada fellowship, Hugh earned a PhD in astronomy from the University of Toronto. For several years he continued his research on quasars and galaxies as a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology. In 2012, Hugh, together with Dr. Gerald Schroeder, received the Ide P. Trotter Prize presented by Texas A&M University in recognition of his work in demonstrating connections between science and religion. Outside of RTB, Hugh teaches as an adjunct faculty member at both A.W. Tozer Seminary and Southern Evangelical Seminary. He also serves as a minister of apologetics at Sierra Madre Congregational Church where he conducts a weekly apologetics class. Hugh lives in Southern California with his wife, Kathy, and their two sons.

Lee Strobel is an atheist-turned-Christian, former award-winning legal editor of The Chicago Tribune, a New York Times best-selling author of more than twenty books, and serves as Professor of Christian Thought at Houston Baptist University. Described in the Washington Post as “one of the evangelical community’s most popular apologists,” Lee shared the Christian Book of the Year award in 2005 for a curriculum he co-authored with Garry Poole about the movie The Passion of the Christ. He also won Gold Medallions for The Case for Christ, The Case for Faith, and The Case for a Creator, all of which have been made into documentaries distributed by Lionsgate. Lee was educated at the University of Missouri (Bachelor of Journalism degree) and Yale Law School (Master of Studies in Law degree). He was a journalist for 14 years at The Chicago Tribune and other newspapers, winning Illinois’ highest honor for public service journalism from United Press International. Lee became a Christian in 1981. He joined the staff of Willow Creek Community Church in 1987 and later became a teaching pastor. He joined Saddleback Valley Community Church as a teaching pastor in 2000. In addition, Lee taught First Amendment Law at Roosevelt University. In recognition of the extensive research for his books, he was honored by Southern Evangelical Seminary with the conferring of a Doctor of Divinity degree in 2007. Lee’s other books include The Case for the Real Jesus, Finding the Real Jesus, God’s Outrageous Claims, The Case for Christmas, The Case for Easter, and Surviving a Spiritual Mismatch in Marriage, which he wrote with his wife, Leslie. He has been interviewed on such national TV networks as ABC, Fox, PBS and CNN, and his articles have been featured in the Wall Street Journal and Newsweek. He has been a recurring guest on The Bible Answer Man and Focus on the Family radio programs. He is a member of the Evangelical Philosophical Society. Lee and Leslie have been married for over 40 years, have two children, several grandchildren, and currently live in Texas.
